San Diego Basics

San Diego is California’s second largest city and the United State’s seventh.


BASIC INFO

  • Population: 1.3 million residents citywide and 2.8 million residents countywide.
  • Area Code: 619
  • Tax: 12.6% Hotel Tax on Hotel Rooms, 7.75% Sales Tax on purchases.
  • Time Zone: Pacific Standard Time PST – November to March.
    Pacific Daylight – April to October
  • Credit Cards and Charge Cards are widely accepted. ATM machines can be found in many major downtown department stores, hotels, and the San Diego Convention Center.

TIPPING GUIDELINES

  • Restaurants: 15%-20% of the toal bill is a good general rule of thumb
  • Hotel Personnel/Porterage: $1.00 - $2.00 per piece of luggage or parcel
  • Valet Parking: $2.00-$3.00 to attendant.
  • Housekeeping Services: $2.00 - $3.00 /day
  • Taxi/Towncar: 15% of total
  • Concierge Services: $5.00 +

SAN DIEGO TRANSPORTATION

  • The San Diego Trolley routes start at the Mexico Border, go through Downtown, Old Town, Fashion Valley, Mission Valley, and end in Santee. Trolley fares are based on trip distance.
  • Taxis run regularly throughout downtown and at San Diego International Airport. The average taxi fare to downtown hotels is approximately $8.00 -$10.00.
  • Car Rental services are available at San Diego International Airport. Car rental reservation boards are located near baggage claim areas of Terminal 1 and 2. Use the courtesy phones provided to request shuttle transportation to the car rental company of your choice.
  • Shuttle vans and buses operated by off-airport companies are a popular and convenient transportation option. Shuttle service is available at the Transportation Plazas across from Terminals 1 and 2, and curbside at the Commuter Terminal.
  • The San Diego Water Taxi provides transportation service along San Diego Bay. The fee is $7.00 per person each way, which will take you to Shelter Island, Harbor Island, Downtown, or Coronado.

  • Anza Borrego Desert State Park - 2 hours
  • Coronado - 7 minutes
  • Escondido - 30 minutes
  • Hotel Circle - 10 minutes
  • Julian - 90 minutes
  • La Jolla - 20 minutes
  • Mission Bay - 15 minutes
  • Oceanside - 45 minutes
  • San Diego International Airport (Lindbergh Field) - 10 minutes
  • Ensenada - 2 hours
  • Rosarito - 1 hour
  • Tijuana - 30 minutes
